Crushing grapes by foot was a part of the traditional wine-making process. Rather than being crushed in a wine press or by another mechanised method, grapes are repeatedly trampled in vats by barefoot participants to release their juices and begin fermentation. Grape treading was widespread in the history of wine-making, but today, with the industrial methods, it survives only and mostly as a recreational activity at festivals. The “crushing the grapes” as the traditional wine-making method is metaphorically handled. The barrel form and crushing of the process of the grapes are abstracted in the proposed design. The design problem is seen as an opportunity for research by design, and the contemporary computational design and manufacturing mediums are the research tools for this process.
